For me, the best Motown read is Bill Dahl's track-by-track notes to the Complete Motown Singles sets. He should publish them in book form for the benefit of those who don't have the box sets. Otherwise, not too much new since that thread in I read bios of the Marvelettes, Florence Ballard, and the Supremes. This is a book talk on this uniquely narated nonfiction text by Andrea Davis Pinkney. It’s clever, comparing a journey through the creation of Motown to that of an actual road trip, and Pinkney really makes it work.

I believe the fact that this is technically supposed to be a children’s book plays into that. But although it is targeted at that age group, I don’t think adults should shy away from reading it.
